Why almost every Option One customer adds battery

Under California's old NEM 2.0 rules, you got paid full retail rate for electricity you exported to the grid. Solar without battery made financial sense.

Under NEM 3.0, that export credit drops by roughly 75%. The math changes: a solar-only system pays back much slower. But pair solar with a battery, and you store your daytime production for use during expensive 4–9pm peak hours — capturing that value yourself instead of giving it back to the grid for pennies.

That's why 95% of our customers add battery storage. The numbers finally work.

Three things one system gives you

Outage Protection

When PSPS hits or the grid goes down, your home keeps running. Whole-home or essential-loads coverage — your call.

TOU Rate Protection

Your battery powers your home during expensive peak hours. You buy from the grid only when it's cheap (or never).

SGIP Rebate

California pays homeowners thousands back for adding storage. We handle the SGIP paperwork at no cost.

⚡ Tesla Certified Installer

Tesla Powerwall 3 — our standard battery

We're a Tesla Certified Installer, and we lead with the Powerwall 3 on the majority of our jobs. It's the cleanest, most capable residential battery on the market today — designed for whole-home backup right out of the box.

  • Whole-home backup ready. 11.5 kW continuous, 24 kW peak — runs the entire home, including AC.
  • Solar inverter built in. Up to 6 strings of solar input directly into the Powerwall 3 — fewer parts, simpler install, cleaner aesthetic.
  • 13.5 kWh per unit, stackable. Pair multiple units (up to 4) for larger homes or multi-day outage protection.
  • 10-year Tesla warranty + our installation warranty. The Tesla app gives you full visibility into production, storage, and home usage.

Sizing matters. A single Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) covers most of a typical home for a day. Two units (27 kWh) keeps AC and big loads running through multi-day outages. We size based on real load data from your last 12 months of bills — not a one-size-fits-all kit.

Real outages. Real customers. Lights stayed on.

Video testimonial from Chris Fortuna, High Desert, CA

"Feels really good to have a negative electric bill."

Chris Fortuna · High Desert, CA

Chris built a fully electric, self-sufficient desert home. We scaled his system up so it produces more energy daily than the home consumes — and stores the surplus to ride through utility outages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is battery important under NEM 3.0?
Under California's NEM 3.0 rules, the credit you get for sending excess solar to the grid is much lower than the price you pay to buy electricity from the grid. A battery stores your own solar production and lets you use it during peak-rate evening hours, dramatically improving the economics of a new solar install.
Will my whole house run on battery during a blackout?
It depends on system size. We size each system around your specific load profile and what you want covered. A typical whole-home setup with a 13.5 kWh battery can run essential loads (lights, refrigerator, internet, fans) for a full day or more. Larger systems can run AC and the entire home through multi-day outages.
What is the SGIP rebate and do I qualify?
SGIP (Self-Generation Incentive Program) is a California state rebate that reduces battery cost by thousands of dollars. Eligibility depends on your utility, household income, and whether you're in a designated wildfire-risk or grid-resilience zone. We help you check eligibility and file the paperwork at no cost.
Which battery do you install?
We're a Tesla Certified Installer and we lead with the Tesla Powerwall 3 on the majority of our jobs. It's the cleanest, most capable residential battery on the market today — 13.5 kWh per unit, 11.5 kW continuous output (24 kW peak), built-in solar inverter, and a 10-year Tesla warranty. Most SoCal homes need one or two units for whole-home backup; we size yours based on real load data from your last 12 months of bills.
How long does battery installation take?
Most battery-only installs are completed in one day. Solar + battery installs typically take one to two days for the install itself, plus permitting and utility interconnection that adds a few weeks to the overall timeline. We handle every step from permitting to final inspection.
