Why are SCE and Edison rates going up so fast?

California utilities have raised rates faster than inflation for years, driven by wildfire mitigation costs, grid hardening, and the new Base Service Charge under California AB 205. SCE confirmed approximately a 13% rate hike in October 2025, with additional hikes forecast through 2026. Solar essentially locks in your electricity rate for 25 years, while grid customers continue to absorb annual increases.

How fast does solar pay for itself?

For a Southern California homeowner with a $300+/month bill, the typical payback period is 6 to 9 years (cash purchase) or shorter with financing if your monthly loan payment is below your current bill. After payback, the system continues producing power for another 16 to 19 years of pure savings, plus a 25-year manufacturer warranty.

What happens to my bill in 5 years if I don't go solar?

If California's rate trajectory continues, a $300 bill today is likely a $400 to $500 bill in 5 years. Solar locks in most of your electricity costs at today's rate; the only variable is any small grid-tie service charge.

Do I need a battery in California now?

Under NEM 3.0 (the current California net-metering rules), homes that export solar power to the grid get paid much less than they did under NEM 2.0. A battery stores your daytime solar production and uses it during expensive evening hours, dramatically improving the economics of new solar in California. About 95% of our customers add battery storage.

Can I afford solar without a lease?

Yes. Most of our customers either pay cash or use a fixed-rate solar loan where the monthly loan payment is comparable to or lower than their current electric bill. Unlike a lease, you own the system, capture the federal Investment Tax Credit, and the asset increases your home's value.
